the Black & Peacock Spider

another QUICK & SIMPLE little pattern using only 3 materials,,Peacock Herl,Black Hen Hackle  and a Gold Rib,,this is a very good wet fly to use as an imitation for snails and it may also be taken for caddis patterns believe it or not,,its a good early season fly and can be fished on all lines from floater to sinker,,i think it fishes better on intermediate and sinking line right on the bottom anyhow its your choice but one you should definately consider tying as its so qiuck to tie.

hook: kamazan size 12
thread:Black UNI 8.0
rib: Gold wire or similar
body:Peacock Herl
Hackle: Black Hen

Step 1
place the hook in the vice and make eight turns of thread

Step 2
tie in the Rib and begin to wind back to the hook bend

Step 3
once at the bend take your Hackle Pliers, grip the piece
of waste rib and jiggle around until it breaks of

Step 4
tie in TWO strands of Herl at the bend then wind forward
to bind it down

step 5
wind on the Herl in touching turns and tie in

Step 6
take each strand of Herl and pinch of

Step 7
wind on the Rib (about 4/5 turns is enough) and tie in

Step 8
prepare a HEN hackle like this

Step 9
tie in the Hackle

Step 10
make two turns of hackle and tie in,,,now depending
on how i want the fly to look ie with  a longer barb lenght
depends on which hackle i decide to use,,sometimes i
will use a LONG BARB lenght like this purely to give a
little added movement but the Main thing is you need to
tie it Sparsely,,this hackle has a LONG BARB length

step 11
this Hackle has a SHORTER barb lenght,,but still
tied sparsely

Step 12
tie in and whip finish

Final Step
remember to Varnish the head
you dont want all that good work to fall apart  Laughing  Laughing
The Final Fly,,, ENJOY  Very Happy  Very Happy  Very Happy  Very Happy  Very Happy

As i said before this is a great little pattern and can also be tied
with a Fluorescent Tag/Butt of Orange/green etc etc and a good early
pattern,,tie it and try it

All comments/questions welcome

Regards

Great Pattern FB and great stp-by-step. I like it with the flouro green tag, but then I will stick a flouro green tag on anything. A similar pattern with a furnace hackle can be tied with fouro green tying thread. This leaves a little green hot spot at the head. Patterns like this have worked well for me at the Woodburn dams.

Fossil

its always the little patterns like this that can be overlooked when we open our fly boxes,,so simple yet so effective,,,i would fish this quite often with a Damsel on the point and it`s worked quite well,,,try tying it on a Long Shank Hook say a size 12 kamazan B830 it can be exceptionally good from early spring,,its being taken for caddis i would think in this size...the look of it says it all

Something like this mate
