the Blue Winged Olive
this fly uses only Two materials ie CDC and a few tail fibers,,this is the Dry BWO which hatches from Sep until April and some of the best hatches can be had from late Feb until early March,,so now is the time to tie a few of these,,you can have great sport the Dry FLY and this pattern floats like a cork,,, the pattern here was tied by Oliver Edwards,,while it is a bit tricky to tie its also one of the fun patterns i like to tie,,,,
Hook: size 14/16 dry fly
thread: black UNI 8.0
tail: stiff fibers or pheasant tail
body: natural CDC
Step 1
take FOUR natural CDC plumes
(i have used Jumbo CDC as all the feathers are the same size
they are a bit more expensive but well worth the money)
Step 2
next we need to cut a little V shape out of
each plume so in the next few Photos i will demonstrate
this using brown card as its easier to explain.......
take each plume like this
step 3
cut a V from all FOUR and you should have this
Step 4
place each one on top of the other so that the V shape
on each feather matches up like this
Step 5
here are the CDC feathers,,notice the V
Set these aside for now
Step 6
place the hook in the vice and wind on the thread
stopping at the bend
Step 7
tie in the tail fibers at the bend and wind forward
until about 3/4 of the way along the shank
Step 8
here comes the tricky part,,it took me 7 attempts to get this
right,,hold the feathers and tie them in at the BUTTS with
two loose turns of thread then while still holding them simply
pull all four feathers BACK which keeps all the fibers pointing
forward until you feel the thread dropping off into the V shape
then tie in,,,you MUST have all four feathers sitting like this,,
if they dont sit this way take them off and keep trying until you
get it right as this is very important....
Step 9
with the four feathers tied in take the thread to the front of
the little bunch,,pull the fibers back and put lots of turns of thread
on until they sit up
step 10
if you have a rotary vice tilt it so that you can devide the bunch
into TWO equal parts,,,spend some time doing this as they are
going to be the wings and you wont want one having more fibers
than the other,,this is an overhead view,,, see how the CDC is now
more or less split in TWO, this is important to form the wings
Step 11
take the thread infront of the wings then take the TOP feather up
and over between the little gap of the CDC and tie in
Step 12 take the next feather and do the same,, now you should
have TWO feathers like this,,,only two more to go
Step 13
this is what you should have,,all FOUR reathers tied in
Step 14
now take the thread to the bend of the hook
Step 15
take the TOP feather (the last one you tied in) by the BUTT
and bring it back through the gap of the CDC and tie it in at
the bend of the hook like this
Step 16
take the next feather BACK along the SIDE of the hook and
also tie in,,,do the same on the other side of the hook with
the THIRD feather and tie in,,,this is how it looks
Step 17
with the butts tied in wind the thread forward in open turns
this is effectively your rib,,,and trim the butts,,leave the thread
under the last feather right at the eye,,your fly should look
something like this with the last feather left
Step 18
pull some of the fibers of the last stem then trim the stem
leaving the fibers of the feather sticking out,,trim these
fibers to create little legs like this
Final Step
whip finish and Varnish the head
you dont want all that good work to fall apart
