I had planned to get up early this morning and fish the dam at first light ...

That didn't happen due to a number of factors, the main one being I left me phone in the landrover, no phone + too many bulmers = no alarm = slept in Sad

No matter I spent the morning tying a few flies , I also spent a small fortune in Belfast Angling Center ,  I needed a 6# int line so went with the  Rio "lake"  which has a 3 foot clear tip . and a  1 1/2" per sec sink rate , tested it out today and as you would expect from Rio its superb

Anyway I drove up to Wodburn in the afternoon, parked in the lower car park and walked up onto the first dam , didn't see any fish moving or rising , there wasn't much in the way of insect life about . So I practised my casting with the new line and took a few photos

I dandered on up to the middle dam , when are DCAL giong to install a bloody escalator, those steps are seriously not good for ye

There was half a dozen or so Anglers fishing the middle dam , using bait of some sorts , I didnt see anyone fly fishing, I walked along the left side of the dam and saw a  fish rising , so I started fishing , 4th cast got this wee brownie on a dawl bach , a quick photo and back he went  ...that was the new line christened

I fished for a while on the middle dam, casting a dozen times then moving on up 30yds or so , I had another  take but the wee shite spat
the hook at my feet

I moved on to the top dam, I saw quite a few fish rising but couldnt catch them .. I fished right round the dam and had a lot of missed takes on a daddy long legs, the fish seemed very small , maybe they couldnt get the fly into their gubs ...   ?

Light was fading fast ,so cursing all things brown and spotty I decided to call it a night

As I came down the steps towards the middle dam I saw a nice fish rising, about 20 yds out , I  cast the fly and it landed 3 feet from his last rise.  bang he came out of the water .. bingo fish on

Must say he gave a very good account of himself , a few photos and back he went .  guessing at about  1 1/2 lb or thereabouts ..

A great ending to a frustrating day

Andy

Thanks for the report Andy,,its been quite a while since i last fished any of the dams at Woodburn,,if anything i prefer the Mourne to the rest of them but it was serious low on water last year and wellllll im not so sure if the water loss has caused any damage to the Lough,,,at one time there were some great fish in the Mourne and i`ve had my fair share of over wintered browns from it,,,i wonder how its doing now ??

Regards
