What can you say Syd, my reaction is a mixture of sadness and anger, but mostly anger. This of course is a common sight in just about every public or free fishery I have ever visited, and always has been. I have of course seen much worse. In fact I do not have to travel far to see much worse.
One thing missing from that sequence was the litter that shows, without doubt that anglers were responsible, the groundbait bags, sweetcorn tins, tackle wrappings etc. Also, as a man who likes a drink as much as anyone else, I really fail to see the connection between drink and fishing. Also not shown is the level of vandalism caused, just for the hell of it, but also to obtain something to burn. This includes fencing, stands but worst of all growing trees. In an age were we have good quality bivives and outdoor cooking gear, the obsession with setting fire to everything goes over my head as well.
Litter is a blight on our whole society but espicially on our favorite past time. It is one that the powers that be in angling, along with most other things of course, have miserably failed to grasp. The only answer, that I can see, is to fish only on controlled and private waters where such behavior is not tolerated.
A good post Syd, and an issue much in need of debate. |

Its everywhere Fossil but the point you make about using outdoor stoves etc will never happen with these guys. They look upon fishing as a day out with a beer where quality of tackle and fish welfare come a very poor second.
I took a walk down to Ballykeel Lougherne this morning and counted 5 empty pikebait bags just on that front section, right beside the DCAL sign which says fly fishing only. Pisses me off when you think how much the game permit etc. is.
Has anyone on the forum fished it by the way?
Bring back the wombles, they used to pick it all up
