tack4

a day in jockland for tack 4

had a day at the fishery near newton stewart sw scotland i caught the fish that won me the rod in fluff comp  on matchpool forum

arrived at 11 o'clock

forecast was for showers/ light rain with high winds gusting to 30mph

well they got the showers n light rain wrong there was atorrent of rain but only lasted approx 20mins and i was having coffee in the wee hut at the time

wind was as forecst and didn't think iwould get a chance to christen my wonderful new rod as a 5wt

Jack the owner came round for his dues as i was tackling up and advised to fish a bit further up tahn were i was standing but i had just spotted a gentle shoulder n back rise ( have been reading up on rise forms) so went with my first thoughts of a size16 cdc silver tag on dropper and a wee 16 red n silver buzzer on the point.

first cast with my trusty 7wt rod and fish on

jack couldn't belive it

i had been studying the water as i have been told to (by Harry my m8 from northern ireland) prior to his arrival

next cast same take but broken off ned of buzzer (the only fly i lost all day a record for me)

he laughed as did i and went back to my boxes

"any nymphs andrew?" he asked

"yeah a wee PTN (Pheasant Tail Nymph) size 16" I replied( had tied these the other night)

"stick one one your point" he advised "and dont fish this same bit all the time have a move or two there's a few holding spots over there n there" he pointed.

well i could go on forever with this report but boy did the combo of cdc silver tag and the PTN hit the right spot with the trout. I lifted too early in to the next three fish then relaxed a bit and got my lift better by 1pm i had my 5 fish in the bag and was then planning C&R after some lunch

wind was still gusting but tackled up my new alba/matchpool2007 5wt rod from stan the man.

after a few swishes to get a feel i put on another combo of cdc tag n ptn flies ( if it aint broke dont fix it  )

could n't get the cast to turnover properly after several attempts so took it back to the hut for safe keeping and got the 7wt going again

this time casting around area i got my rod winning fish and the total started to climb again

started to think about my current catch record of 9 in a session but in a blink i was in double fiures of fish landed

time was creeping on and suddenly got a bit dull n darker a look sky ward hinted its gonna chuck down so off to the hut i went flask out n coffee 'n' a banana loverly jubberly

well the heavens opened and i sat inside n contemplated my days fun and hoped this rain would lessen the wind

not at first it didnt

fish 11 n 12 were the last on the 7wt and i judged the wind to have dropped atad so went around the loch to hopefully an easier cast with wind over left shoulder

casting was easier rod felt superb teh it happend

fish on

landed was ok'd to give it its last rights as first fish with new rod

but ahh it was no. 13 light fading must fish on cant finish on 13

final tally 15 fish to 2 lb 12 on my self tied PTN's 1 to a buzzer and 2 to cdc silver tag

guess what i had for tea

PTN`s doing the trick for you,,im glad to hear that,,,of all the flies we have in our box and the hours we spend tying this pattern and that pattern and buying god knows what new sparkley stuff to out smart the fish then what happens ? ? a PTN does the damage,,happy days...
