A Leader Question

What type and breaking strain of leader do the members use?  Most of my fishing at present is with 6lb Maxima.

Great believer in fluorocarbon. Recently tried it for the first and was lucky enough to catch that night, have used it ever since. 6 to 8 lb for most trout fishing is fine, although I have heard some say they use lighter.

i use 6lb maxima aswell fossill unless dry fly fishing i would drop down to 3 or 4lb i find the maxima quite good
adriany

I use Rio fluroflex flurocarbon and Stevie does a spool of fluro called virage which is super for the price.
ChrisDickey

i use 6lb airflo sightfree for buzzers, nymphs, lures and wets and i use 4-6lb drennan sub surface for the dries, used wychwood sub surface but it kept snapping wen tying knots
Blackbacks

I use Drennan Sub surface in 4lb for dries/buzzers
and 6lb for lures!

FF like yourself i use 6lb maxima when fishing DCAL dams. On private fisheries i would use drennan double strength from 6lb down to 2lb 12oz depending on the day. When im fishing PFs i would add a piece of power gum to my leader as i think this prevents smash takes. I dont like fluorocrabon at all ive lost a lot of fish when useing it and it breaking at the knot. I was in a tackle shop and was told that most of it is only fluorocarbon coated i dont know if its true. Maybe someone on the forum would know if its true. When salmon fishing MAXIMA is my number one choice you cant beat it.

I tend to use fluorocarbon of late but the last couple of times I've been out I've used 6lb mono I got free with a mag and it seems to be ok. I also have Drennan subsurface in 5 and 6lb. I must try tapered leaders but will need to get someone to show me how to set them up.

Apache,
I know a little bit about this from my carp fishing experiences. Pure flourocarbon is extremely expensive to manufacture. That is why the small spools we use both for fly fishing and hook lengths in carp fishing cost so much. The useful properties of flourocarbon, apart from the invisble in water business which I have serious doubts about, are that it is stiffer than normal mono and is heavier, therefore sinks quickly. These advantages are obvious in fly fishing, but in carp fishing we used it to assemble stiff anti-eject rigs which lay tight to the bottom of the lake. A typical carp rig is about 5" long so there is no problem with buying small quantitys. Flourocarbon is also very knot sensitive. Not a problem with carp fishing as your are using breaking strains much higher than your reel line to achieve the stiffness required.

To add this supposed beneficial invisible property to coarse fishing reel lines without the stiffness, brittleness and expense, some manufacturers produce a line that is basically a normal mono or copolymer with a flourocarbon coating fused to the surface. These lines are well thought off but I have never used them. I have always been of the opinion that I want to use conventional, no nonsense standard nylons that I have total confidence in. I have also gone through this same thought process in the short time that I have been fly fishing. Flourocarbon just does not work for me, and I am not confident in low diameter coplymers.

For pike and carp fishing my line of choice for many years has been Diawa Sensor. Cheap as cheaps but totally reliable. For fly fishing I have yet to find anything that gives me more confidence than Maxima. I do worry though about the thickness of the 6lb when fishing buzzers.

Double Strength is among a type of monos that are simply conventional nylon that has been pre stretched to make it thinner. It was the first type of the so called high tech lines. I, and many other coarse anglers, had serious problems with this stuff. Firstly, as it was pre stretched there was no give and breakages would be sudden. You actually had to step up your breaking strain when using it. Also, when knotted you got a 'pig-tail' effect at the knot which led to tangles and poor presentation. Once kinked, it stayed kinked and really had to be binned.  Never ever liked the stuff.

It is no longer widely used in coarse angling, apart maybe for hooklengths, and I am surprised that it is used at all in fly fishing. Although I notice that Drennan mark the spools as  'fly leader'.  Modern copolymers must offer all the same advantages without those problems.

Would be interested to know how you find it.

Looks the business, diameters very similar to Maxima and other conventional monos. What breaking strain would you use for buzzers - 4lb?
Hardy Caster

yep 4lb is what i normally use , i have loads of it if you wnat to try some

Thank you Firey,
Still interested in which one you would use for buzzers the 4lb or the 6lb. I am thinking that perhaps my 6lb nylon is a little thick for size 12 and 14 buzzers. If I am not going to use high tech stuff (which I would really rather avoid doing) that means going down to 4lb breaking strain for stocked rainbows. Would anyone else fish that light for put and take fish?

Not for the ones they've been putting into Straid of late I wouldn't.
