A METHOD WORTH TRYINGHi All
a few weeks ago i had the pleasure of visiting the Tack4 clan in jockland for a couple of days and in that time i visited a few fisheries,,among them was a Place called PINBRAID, a great fishery with some monster browns and rainbows over 15 lb,,,
after the days fishing as we were heading for the car i got to chatting with a couple of the local scots guys and as we swapped patterns and ideas etc etc they were explaing a method of tying a NYMPH on the point in some sort of loop,,well i couldn`t quite get to grips of what they were telling me due to the broad country scots accent and the terminology they were using but a week or so later i hit on exactly what it was and have been trying it ever since then with decent results....
this is what is was.....
we normally tie our flies on using the conventional 4/5 or even 6 turn knot but this (as the guys explained) can make the nymph fish in a very un-natural way and often causes fish to reject the fly...this is especially true when trout become more and more selective of our offerings...
this pic shows how the fly would normally be tied on
when i held the line out between my finger and thumb this became more apparent and therefore if it were cast out on to the water the nymph would indeed fish in a very un-natural way as the line tends to hold the fly at an angle (bearing in mind i only used 4lb line here for these shots) and this would be even worse if it were tied on to the normal heavier line that most anglers would use ie 6lb,,
so the thinking is this,,nymphs would tend to swim upwards in the water in probably as vertical a position as it is possible,so in order to have the nymph hanging in the water it would need to be tied to the line where it can move freely and dangle in such a position as to imitate a natural nymph,,,so this was shown to me via tying the nymph on to the point of your tippet in a LOOP just like this
since then i`ve tried this method a few times and YES is works,,NOT ALL THE TIME but it works,,,in harder fishing conditions ie flat calms trout are easily spooked and a nymph sitting in the water as in the first photo COULD quite easily be rejected by the fish but in the photo above it just MIGHT be taken more readily as a natural offering...im not saying you`re going to get bags of fish if you try this or that every trout will accept this as "the real thing".. what im saying is its A METHOD WORTH TRYING and for the simple fact that it takes only a few seconds to tie it on then what have you got to loose ??? im certainly looking more and more at this and will be trying it with other flies such as buzzers etc etc..
here is the final photo,,again im holding this in mid air as if to represent the tippet being on the water and look how the nymph sits it has definately got a more natural looking appearence
looking forward to your comments on this

That is interesting. Have seen similar types of connections to deal with other problems in other fields of fishing. Hinged carp rigs and movement of with artificial lures are two that come to mind.
I always rember the knot being difficult and never really got round to mastering it. In carp fishing you could use swivels with an attached ring, which gave me more confidence, and with lures you always needed to incorparate a wire trace in case of pike. So simply never saw any reason to get to grips with it.
There is no doubt that in all types of fishing there will be times when this set up could provide an advantage. Certainly worth thinking about.
One question just, will nymphs fished on droppers not behave in a similar way?

in a word Fossil NO... because when you think about it a nymph tied on a dropper or indeed any fly tied on a dropper will still sit un-naturaly in the water,,even though the dropper is hanging down it will still have that rigid look to it as in the Second photo,,

Great tip Harry, how did you form the loop knot, I think that buzzers fished this way would definitely give them a more natural movement
Using them hook snap links should give you the same movement without having to tie the loop knot, I think they where a brought out to save you tying your fly on every time you changed

I use and have done for many years a similar method to this. I use the perfection loop to tie on my flies and use it I would say in 95% of my fishing. The exception to this would be when I am fishing dries.
