Beating the Gales

Fished Woodford today in the gale force winds. Certainly limited my choice of swims, the east bank was completely no go to me, or anyone else I think for that matter. I was really pleased with myself for actually managing to get a days fishing, this time six months ago I would never have even considered fly fishing on a day like this.

Conditions of course were difficult and not many were fishing, but a few fish were still being caught. Most successful method seemed to be green coloured lures fished very close to the bottom. I managed one nice fish on a coral fritz, a result I was extremely happy with under the circumstances.

Wildlife high light of the day was watching a pair of small birds, male and female, sitting on the barbed wire fence at the western edge of the fishery. At first I thought them to be whinchats, but having got home and checked they were in fact stonechats. Lovely to see and added to another enjoyable day out.

Very Happy

I was there on Sunday in similar conditions - not especially cold, just very blustery. I managed to get one on a green and black lure/nymph and my dad managed two. I was using a floater and there were a surprising number of fish moving on the top.
