first fish to a dry this year

Caught this wee fella on an f-fly on Killylane, dead chuffed, i'd forgotten how satisfying it is to catch on the dry

Nice one, but you look freezing.  Shocked

Nice one Andy. When did you get it? If it was yesterday I can understand why you look freezing. I was up last night with my dad. On the way home I stopped at the garage to get bread. I looked at my hand and my fingers were covered in blood. The water had been so cold that the line had cut into my finger when I was retrieving and I didn't even notice until they had warmed up. Incidently I caught five (all returned) and lost four) and my dad had similar results. The place is fishing really well at the minute. Very Happy

was up on saturday(12th), it wasn't too bad with the cold, although i gave up on the wading idea after i couldn't feel my legs. I have an old pair of neoprene waders i might start wearing in the colder months, there is no warmth in those new ones(even with thermally trousers things). went up again on tuesday evening (I think thats the night you caught beatnik) and couldn't catch anything. The only time i saw a fish rise was to a pimp that had come of my mates fly line, a couple of fish tried to eat it! If only i had thought to bring large bright orange dries! I definatly be back in the near future, its a cracking place

Andy I was up on Saturday and got one, then was up on Tuesday and Wednesday and did well. They seem to be going for Pennells and Zulus at the minute.

i have yet to get into wet flies. what sort of setup did you use. i get scared if i use more than one fly.

I started off with a leader of about 15" and two droppers. On my first cast last night a fish swirled at the middle dropper. I cast at it again and it bit at the same fly but got away. When I looked the bugger had broken the dropper off! (must tie a few more of those). I decided to stick with one dropper then and ended up with a cast of about 10". To start with I had a size 10 Black Pennell on the point, a fly of my own tying (I can't even remember the pattern - I'll check tonight and post it)on the middle dropper and a size 14 (I think) Zulu on the top dropper. My first few fish came to the Zulu and the rest to the Pennell.
