Flies for the Lagan.A guy in work has sort of started fly fishing. He usually goes up to Shaw's Bridge with his son and would fish for anything, trout or coarse (has had a few roach of late). I said I would tie him up a few flies for it. trouble is I've never really fished the rivers so don't know what to tie up. I said I'd do a couple of GRHEs but I think he wants dries as well. does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could tie (and patterns if possible)?

you could always start with the trusty Grey Duster,,a great little fly even on the still waters and reasonably easy to tie,,another would be the Blue Dunn or Iron Blue Dunn,,Griffiths Gnat is also a pretty good fly for the rivers but if its expert advice you`re looking for then speak to Hardycaster he should keep you right.... hope this helps

Greenwell's spider tied wet and dry should be a useful pattern.
I caught my first ever trout at Shaw's Bridge. Downstream in the fast water that is now the canoe course. Three little rainbows on the tiniest size Abu Droppen. About 1971 I think. Spent many happy days further upstream at Minnowburn catching gudgeon from the burn and the main river. Also had a nice rudd from the grounds of the old pig marketing board building further downstream.
Many years later I used to compete in the Lagan evening summer league down near Stranmillis. Long pole short line, tiny hooks and fine tackle for spratt sized roach.
Nice to see that there are still fish being caught.
