Fly tying celebs

Having been in the business for a while I had to keep my mouth shut bout anglers etc lol but now im free... free i tell you.

I have been tying flies for at least 20 years and I wouldnt call myself a Pro by any stretch of the imagination but there are a few guys on the circuit who have been tying for let me think... 1 year and they like to believe they are the knowledge when it comes to flies and tying etc when actually they know fcuk all and can hardly tie their laces never mind recreate an insect. IVe just about had it with people who are so far up their arses they have taken the enjoyment out of the sport and art of fly tying and they try to let people think they have been tying for years.

On here we have probably a couple of the best tiers around and to be honest their work is a credit to them and we are lucky to have such talented tiers here.

The best quote I ever heard was and I quote as certain members can vouch for.

' What happens if somebody asks you about a certain fly and the life cycle of the insect? '

Answer ' Thats why I got Peter Oreillys book Il just get the info outta it '

Nuff said now thats off my chest.

Have a nice day lmfao

Adrian,
Stop beating about the bush and just say what you mean.  Rolling Eyes  Very Happy  Very Happy

You are right though, the standard of fly tying among a few of our members is simply amazing. I belong to other UK forums and I have no doubt that some of the members of this little forum can hold their own amongst any company.

I am not, and never will be, a good fly tyer. That is not out of any sense of false modesty or simply because I am a beginner. I simply do not poccess the dextrity and hand to eye co-ordination skills that will make me good at any art, craft or even basic DIY skills. (The wife will happily confirm that). No amount of practice will compensate for a lack of basic talent. As such when I see the type of talent displayed by certain members of this forum, yourself included, I am seriously impressed and any praise given is genuine.

But, there is something very important that the others like myself who are either never going to acheive those standards, or are only beginning need to know. Despite my lack of skill I still insist on tying my own flies. I love it, and have come to derive as much pleasure from it as I do fly fishing. Also, most importantly, my efforts catch fish. Catching fish on flies that you have tied yourself adds greatly to the whole pleasure and satisfaction derived from fishing. Be impressed and amazed by the skill of others on here, but never let it put you off doing it yourself. Believe me, if I can construct an artificial that will tempt a trout, anyone can.

One other point is that no matter how skillful anyone on this site is, I have always found them to be open and helpful with their techniques and dressings. Even genorous with their tied patterns. There is no doubt that this is the friendliest  of all the forums I have encountered and a place where can all learn much, not just about fly tying, but also fishing from people who have the genuine knowledge, experience and practical skills to pass on to us less talented and experienced. Thanks must go to yourself and all our members for that.

Thank you all.

Very Happy
