FRENCH PARTRIDGE MayflyThe (French Partridge) Mayfly
with the fishing season fast approaching i decided to post a Step by Step of a French Partridge Mayfly so that anyone wanting to attempt this fly will have plenty of time to practise as they can be quite difficult,,
i decided to use RED thread for no other reason than to simply see what effect it has on the dubbing so feel free to use any colour you see fit
i dont set out to tie every fly to perfection that is not the objective,,
the objective is to let you see how I tie it using some methods you are already familiar with and from there you can draw your own conclusions
hook: Kamazan B175 size 10#
thread: Red UNI 8.0
rib: Fine Silver wire
tail: 3 pheasant tail fibers
body: Corrib Mayfly Dubbing (Frankie McPhillips)
body hackle: Light Blue Dunn (palmered)
hackle: Orange Cock
head hackle: French Partridge Dyed light olive (cloak)
Step 1
place the hook in the vice make Eight turns of thread
tie in the rib and continue to the bend of the hook
Step 2
take Three pheasant tail fibers and tie in on top
of the hook shank
Step 3
wind forward towards the eye of the hook binding
down the fibers as you go
Step 4
when you reach this position Trim off the waste
Step 5
tie in a Light Blue Dunn hackle (or similar) with
2 or 3 turns of thread
Step 6
take the thread to the bend of the hook and make
a rope of Dubbing,,then trim the waste of the Dunn Feather
Step 7
with the Dunn feather already trimed, wind on the dubbing
to create the body and stop just behind the hackle
Step 8
wind the hackle along the body to the bend of the hook
then wind the Silver Rib back through the hackle to secure
it,,tie in the rib and trim the waste
Step 9
trim the hackle at the bend and you should now
have something like this
Step 10
tie in an Orange Hackle with 2 or 3 turns of thread working
forward towards the eye
Step 11
make Two touching turns of the hackle working forward towards
the eye and tie in
Step 12
take a French Partridge Feather like this
(in this case Dyed Light Olive)
Step 13
prepare the feather by GENTLY stroking back the fibers,,
hold the TIP of the feather in one hand and stroke them back
until you have this effect,, NOTICE the TIP of the feather
Step 14
tie in the French Partridge Feather by the TIP
just in front of the Orange Hackle and trim the waste
Step 15
make 3 or 4 turns of the hackle and tie in right at the eye
Step 16
pull ALL the fibers back with your finger and thumb and
whip finish,,remember to varnish the head
you dont want all that good work to fall apart
The finished Fly,,ENJOY
All comments/questions welcome
