Goby type fly Step by Step

Goby type fly Step by Step

Materials

Hook: I use a Mustad 2# Long shank
Thread:  Danvilles clear mono
Head: Deer hair
Body: Rams wool also known as Sculpin wool or Sheeps fleece ( I get mine from Austen of UKsaltwaterflies)
Tail: Brown  Hackle
Pectorals: Brown  hen Hackle
Eyes: 3d moulded form Austen

Step one

Good thread base on the hook

Step two

Tie in a wide webby feather either side of the hook shank

Step three

Tie in another wide webby feather either side of the shank

Step four

Tie in two hackles either side of the shank

Step Five

Cut a good sized pinch of rams wool spread it around the shank and reverse tie. pull it back towards the bend of the hook and secure with a few wraps

Repeat this process stacking it tightly after each layer until 2/3 of the hook shank is covered

Step six

Begin stacking the deer hair to form the head

I fuind that three( pencil thickness) sized clumps are sufficient

Step seven

Trimming ... this is the " interesting"  bit

Do not try and trim it down in one go, I find holding the hook between thumb and forefinger is easier than in the vice
Take you time , start with the deer hair and trim it down in gradual steps

Step eight

Cut or burn a recess for the eyes , Affix the eys using a dab of epoxy or I'm told Zap A Gap is very good

Step nine

Make a hole through the body of the fly approx 1/4 " behind the deer hair using your bodkin , strip all the fluffy marabou from a wide webby feather. apply a dab of super glue just where the stalk meets the feather, push through the hole you made in the body, and trim of excess stalk . repeat for other side.

A bit of final trimming, and thats it folks... hope this has been of some help

Looks brilliant. Does the wool not get very heavy when wet?
