Hoppers?This is my first proper season getting to grips with still water dy fly fishing. I read a lot about hopper patterns in books and magazines in relation to the English reservoirs. As yet I have not heard anyone on the local scene mention them. Do we use them, and if so what sort of size and specific pattern? They appear to be generally in size 10 which is much bigger than the dry fly patterns I have been having success with this year.

I've been using hoppers all season FF. Claret ones and black ones size 10 and 12's. On occaisions they have saved a blank day for me. Wouldn't be without one in my fly box.

i used hoppers alot last season and the previous season but have not used them as much this season because i`ve been trying out other Dries which have worked well for me and i suppose once you do well on a particular fly you tend to stick with that winning fly...
having said that the hopper is a great fly in fact i have tied them in all colours from Black,Claret,Olive and even one to match the colour of a Dung fly which i had pretty good results with,,,where they came from is another matter but as you said they have featured in magazines and seemed to be used on the English reservoirs,,,i`ve noticed that some flies tend to do well and for a certain period of time then its a case of "what can we come up with next"(especially with all the new materials availible today ie UV,Picric,Illuminous etc) just as the Booby had its day or the Egg Fly or even the Blob some of which are still banned, so maybe its a trend,i dont really know,, it seems that the fly of the moment is the Sparkler ! ! whichever way you look at it the Hopper (for me) is Still a great little Dry Fly in various colours and worth having in your box,,,i tied them mostly in 12`s and the odd few in 14#.. a BLACK hopper can represent so many different things from a Bibio to a Gnat with a little bit of antron or coloured dubbing added here or there (well thats my view on them) Tie`em and Try`em,,and fish them with confidence as they DO work..
