I found this little chap on Lusty BegYesterday we were walking from the restaurant to our room when I looked down and noticed something on the ground. I thought it was a dead fly but bent down to take a look. I lifted it and it was still alive. I'd never actually seen a mayfly in the flesh before. I got a couple of hours fishing from the bank just past the ferry this afternoon. I didn't catch but did see a few fish move and some mayfly hatching off.
Sorry for the poor quality pics but they were taken with my phone.

Brilliant. It actually looks huge. I have coarse fished Lough Erne many times over the years but can never remember seeing a mayfly.

I remember fishing Carra about 3 years ago and the size of Mayfly on it were like butterflies. Beautiful flies and a pleasure to just sit and watch these flies dance on the surface.

beatnik what you are holding looks like a spent mayfly. Notice how pale the body of the fly is its near a creamy white colour. Many a great nights fishing ive had on calm water around the many islands on erne such as rough, stoney & eagle point with the trout feeding on the spent mayfly. I love sitting in a boat on erne on a windless night watching the mayfly as they say dance above the tree tops & doing what they gotta do then drop onto the water to lay there eggs to carry on the life cycle of the mayfly. Gee im getting all sentimental must be old age .

It could very well be apache, though the flash won't have helped. I think it actually looked quite bright when I was holding it.

the Mayfly are up in better numbers now,,just got back from Erne yesterday the fishing was still hard with a few fish showing they dont seem to be really on the fly yet but its looking very good indeed for this weekend,,i`ll be down this Saturday again for a few days so all we need is a little bit of cloud cover and conditions should be perfect.......
Given the weather that we`ve had i`d say the Mayfly should last well into June so lets hope the fish are oblidging
