Just Like Winter

Got down to Woodford this morning. The weather has changed so suddenly. One minute we are having a mild and mellow atumn, next it is like the heart of winter. More like mid November than early October. Grey skies, heavy showers and a strong and blustery Northerly wind. The temperature never really into double figures. Fishing was just like winter as well with nearly everyone opting for small lures on intermediate or sinking lines.

Plenty of fish being caught all round, I ended my day with 7 incuding one of 5 and a half pounds. All my fish came to black and green fritz tadpoles. The big one was caught on a midge tip line, all the others on my slime line. I lost as many fish as I landed, and had plenty of bites and tugs. An eventful day and an excellent result by my standards. I was more than pleased. The change in the weather has obviously done the fishing no harm at all.

Autumn and Winter fishing can be just as good if not better than the spring and summer fishing,,it sometimes can be a matter of tactics than anything with the selection of the right Line for the conditions on the day as opposed to the flies

can you post some pic`s of the flies ie fritz tadpoles etc that you were using today...well done on your catch

No, apart from the beaded ones. The wide gape ones (well spotted) are unweighted and I was using those on a dropper.

Nice one.

I was out on thursday at Killylane and at some points it was impossible to make even a back cast as the wind blew so hard against the rod.

Oul jo  taught me how to do a super roll cast with a back wind one day i was at the wee north i think he lives in the north road, he told me to keep the rod very low and get some line behind me then lift up quick and roll cast high and the wind carries it out

Yeah the roll cast comes in very handy this time of year and really we should practise it during the good weather whenever that is lol. If you can do the roll cast proper you should be able to cast as far as the ordinary cast.
