Leader length ?After Ciarans reply to my buzzer fishing post . i'm wondering what length the rest of you use for your leaders
Currently I use (on a 9 foot rod ) 6 foot tapered leader to a tippet ring to 4-5 feet of 5-3lb flouro
is this too short ?
cheers

Approximately 12 to 13 feet with a single dropper about 7 feet from the flyline. About the first 5 feet is made from quite thick fluorocarbon (8lb Fulling Mill), the remainder from 3X Riverge fluorocarbon. This is a length and material that I can manage to handle at the minute.
For dry flies I use a single fly on a leader of between 9 and 10 feet made from tapering sections of nylon from 10lb down to 4lb nylon or 6lb Greylon copolymer.

To be honest Andy I just go through so many leaders because of tangles it would cost me a fortune. For dry flies I make my own from tapering sections which certainly helps turn over small dry flies. For other times I find the stiff butt section is all that is needed. I use a mono loop (Gray's Loop) on the end of my fly line and find that knotless leaders are to thick to marry to the nylon loop.
A recent discovery, for me, is Riverge. This stuff is really stiff. It has very little tendency to tangle, turns over well and is very easy to knot. Expensive, but so easy to live with. At the minute I am using 3X (9lb b/s) but I think it is actually a bit thicker than other materials rated at 3X. A leader materail for casting idiots like me, but used sparingly. I have just purchased a new 100 yard spool. £18, but it is good.

I have Riverge in 9 ,12 and 15 lb
Must get some lighter stuff
I would have thought it was a thinner diameter flouro than the likes of the Rio's etc
thanks for the advice

I think it is probably thinner if you go by breaking strain. It is the X ratings I am not completely sure about. My 3X, which is the 9lb, looks to me to be exactly the same as 6lb Fulling Mill which is rated as 2X. However there is no comparison at all between the behaviour and knotting ability of the two. Riverge is simply on another planet. Perhaps with a little bit more experience and confidence I will add some 4X to my collection. At £18 spool I had to think long and hard about whether there was anything else cheaper that would do the job just as well, but I can honestly say that if there is, I have yet to find it.
