Loop Wing Sedge

Hi All

TWO of my favourite words in Fly Tying are "QUICK,SIMPLE" so here i am going to do a Step by Step of the Loop Wing Sedge which is both Quick and Simple to tie,i saw this fly being tied by Oliver Edwards (NO not in person but on a DVD lol) which i tied last year and had great success on it so for those of you who have not seen the fly here it is,,,,,

again this fly uses only TWO materials,, natural CDC and a Hackle

hook: kamazan B175 size 12#
Wing: Natural CDC
hackle: Grizzle

Step 1
take a Grizzle Hackle like this and set it aside
if you dont have a Grizzle Hackle dont panic try to
think along the lines of SEDGE and find a Hackle to suit

step 2
take TWO plumes of natural CDC...
for a bigger size lets say 10# it may take
three plumes

Step 3
place one on top of the other,,hold them by the
butts and stroke the fibers forward until they
look like this

Step 4
after placing the hook in the vice and running the
thread to the bend.Place the CDC on TOP of the hook
shank and tie in somewhere near the TIP of the CDC in this fashion
it is VERY important that they tie in like this with the butts
of the CDC sticking up,,if you dont manage it first time keep
trying,,it took 3 goes for me to get them to sit like this

Step 5
take the Hackle,,place it ACROSS the hook and tie in with the
DULL side facing the eye,, just as we did in the DRY FLY post

Step 6
with the butt of the Hackle still sticking out begin to wind on
the thread towards the eye of the hook thus binding down
the butt of the hackle and the CDC together

Step 7
trim of the waste and continute winding forward to
this position,,you will also notice i`ve pulled the hackle
back to give a better view

Step 8
take your dubbing needle, dip it into some varnish and
run the bead of varnish along the body,, do not worry
about catching the odd fiber as i have this is not important,BUT
DO NOT let the varnish dry as we will be winding the hackle
through it,,this gives added strenght to the fly

Step 9
wind the Hackle towards the eye through the WET varnish
i think i managed 6 turns of hackle here, then tie in,, DO
NOT trim of the Hackle at this point leave it were it is...

Step 10
take a pair of scissors and Angle them in this fashion then
trim along the Hackle fibers

Step 11
what you are aiming for is This Effect
i`ve `zoomed a little closer to let you see how the hackle
is longer at the back and slopes forward gradually getting
shorter

Step 12
now take BOTH the butts of the CDC together, fold them
forward to create a LOOP and tie in right were you tied
the Grizzle hackle,,simply trim the waste and wind forward
stopping just before the eye

Final Step
wind the rest of the Hackle forward,,tie in and trim the waste
then whip finish,,job done,,dont forget to Varnish the head
you wouldn`t want all that good work to fall apart  Laughing  Laughing
The final Fly,,ENJOY  Very Happy  Very Happy  Very Happy  Very Happy  Very Happy

This is a super little pattern and well worth having in your Fly
Box,,it floats like a cork and when the fish are on the top of
the water especially around Sedge time i garauntee you`ll
take fish on it,,

All  comments /questions welcome
