Quill Buzzer

Finally brought the tripod in from the car at last so i decided to tie up my favourite buzzer pattern.

Hook 8-16 Buzzer/Grub Hook
Thread Black Uni thread
Butt thread Red Uni thread
Body Olive peacock herl stripped
Cheeks Orange Flexi floss
Breathers White antron crinkle

First step is to run the red thread from the hook eye down the bend of the hook in touching turns and come back up again using touching turns

Whip finish the red thread and trim off. Now get your black thread and tie in as usual. At this point i tie in my breathers and my quill like so

Now run the black thread down the body again tying in the quill as you go along. Stop just before the end of the red thread so you leave a red butt. This acts as the blood sack in a buzzer as it kicks towards the surface. Trust me this wee red tag results in more takes. Run your thread back up the body in touching turns again. Once at the thorax area run your thread back down half way this time and then run back up, this makes i tapered body which again looks really life like.

Now take your time with this part as the peacock quill is fragile. Wind the peacock quill in touching turns up your hook. There is a darker line in a stripped quill which results in a barred or ribbed effect. Once you get to the tricky bit when your fingers and thumbs are barely holding the quill just put the quill into your hackle pliers and continue winding. Now tie of the quill.

Take your thread to where you want the thorax to start. Get your flexifloss and wrap it round the thread Simply hold your floss now and tighten the thread.

The floss should now be tied into the underside of your thorax.

Pull the floss backwards and now form the thorax with a few wraps of thread. Dont make the thorax too big as it will look out of place and out of proportion. Once the thorax is formed bring the floss back up to the eye of the hook. Wrap 1 turn of thread around it then pull the flexi floss upwards to give your wingbuds a diagonal line ie running from the bottom of the thorax to the top like this

A wee touch of varnish I use my missus's varnish she uses for craft making it dries very quickly. Give the buzzer a couple of coats of varnish whatever kind you use and trim down your floss and breathers to the required size and voila.

This is a very very good buzzer pattern and i can honestly say hand on heart it caught me 95% of my fish last year. Tie them in the different sizes and fish 2 of them on whatever lenght of leader you feel comfortable with. Many magazines will tell you that you need to use a 25 foot leader etc BOLLOCKS. Use whatever you can cast. Get a nice turnover in your leader take up the slack line and fish these almost static and hold on coz when a trout takes a buzzer its the most violent take in fishing. ENJOY Smile

Adrian,

Thank-you, that is not only a terrific step by step of what looks like a fantastic pattern, but you have even given good sound advice on how to fish it.

It doesn't really get much better than that. Cheers. Very Happy

super step by step keep`em coming,,,i like the way you tie the quill in at the start,,normally i tie it in at the bend and 6 outta 10 times it breaks,,i`ll be tying them like this from now on Cheers mate

Yes F.B i found that too mate so tying them in at the start means your getting to the thicker part of the quill first.

Don't be leaving your fly box un-guarded if you get out on Monday, or I might just have to confiscate some of them Wink
