sinking lines for winterHi All
what are your thoughts on sinking line work for the winter ie what kind of rods,,lines,,flies etc would you be using and why ??
is the rod more important or the line more important or mabye the flies ? could it be a combination of all 3 or maybe more
a stiff rod has to be top of the agenda for me but others differ in their opinion

I rarely use a line faster than my slime intermediate. Because I fish from the bank there seems little point as the line is on the bottom or in the weeds close the edge long before the belly has fully sunk.
Used a di3 type line today from the boat at Tildarg but even found that sunk a little fast for the conditions and depth of water. Was happy enough using it on my normal 9.5 6/7 rod which is actually fairly soft.

Honestly I think that a 10ft rod is a must. For year I fished with the Scierra HM2 and I thought it was a truely grewat rod im sorry i sold it now. Last year I was using a 10ft Greenheart for a 7. As for lines we dont really have too many DEEP lakes here and I found an intermediate would do the job nicel and if it wasnt getting you down far enuf then id just use a weighted fly. Speed of retrieve is prob the most important thing tho and a retrieve of about 1 inch per 10 seconds or so will do well.
