small hooks

in pic below are the hooks i have used of late for small stuff

sizes are

chub specimen size 20, mustad R30 size 20, chub specimen size 18 and dry 18

chub hooks smaller by a good way and far stonger too the mustad R30's bend very easily and may only last one fish where as the chub ones are practically indestructible lol

size wise 18 chub is very similar to dry 20 and prob 4-5 times stronger

nice shot of the hooks there mate..

any chance of doing a pic of the small hooks beside a standard size 10 or 12 so we get a better understanding of just how small these really are

for small hooks in 18`s and 20`s  i`ve been using Drennan Specimen which are extremely strong,,if anything the fish would rip the material from the hook with their sharp teeth after you`ve had a few on them,, i`ve only been using these from about half way through the season after i kept loosing fish due to bent hooks,,they came recommended to me by Fossil Fish and since i`ve started using them i haven`t had any problems with the hook bending or loosing fish

Drennan Carbon Specimen Hooks

These are what I have been using for the tiny c.d.c.s that Firey introduced me to. I also found that tiny dry fly hooks just did not have the strength for lively rainbows. I use these in size 20.

compare below
size 14 dry top size 14 drenan carbon specimen middle and size 16 dry below Shocked

the drenan hooks also have a slight off set which is said to improve hook up rate too !

Having used the Drennan hooks for this, and other coarse fishing hooks including Kamasan B980s, I have to be honest and say that I actually prefer the straight eye on these type of hooks. I think it makes both dressing the fly and attaching to the leader much easier.

Are there any dedicated fly tying hooks with straight eyes?

Chris,
That looks exactly right. Will have to try that when my current stock runs out.

Cheers.

i have them in 22, and have been tying wee buzzers on them. There was an american guy at the fishery last night and he caught a lovely 4lber on a size 20 black buzzer, so when people say go small lol go small
