Know that feeling
Tying them onto the leader is another challenge, especially as the light fades.

small stuffNothing wrong with them Fossil they will surely take a fish or two for you.
i`ve been having great success lately with the SMALL STUFF,,i`m just
back from Straid after an eight hour session and had well over a dozen
on the small stuff the heaviest being over 4lb,,got to hit the vice again
as a lot of the small flies were straightened however thats not a bad
complaint eh

nice wee flies FF. Sorry for the late reply ive been busy and ive just become a GRANDAD again my 1st grand daughter her name is LEAH. Im chuffed to bits . Back to the flies i know they can be fiddly to tie. When i tie mine i would tie in two CDC feathers not the thick part. I would tie it in as if i was tying a PTN if you know what i mean. I find they float better but it can be a curse trying to get your leader through the eye of the hook. Hope your still having success with the small stuff and your not walking anymore your running

Congratulations on your granddaughter. I have three now so I tell them that I'm three grandas.
Yes I am still catching but I am missing two fish for everyone I hook. I know that I am striking to fast, but it is a very hard habit to break. I tend to hook them when I am not really looking. Practice is the only answer I think.
Yes, tying on is the biggest problem, especially later on as the light begins to fade, I have to predetermine my last fly change of the evening.
BTW, as well as help from Apache on the forum, Firey Brown in person, I am also getting stacks of tips and advice from the guys at Woodford.

quite fancy tying someting similar, i'm addicted to the f fly but the smallest i have is in 12s. I just bought a bag of cdc from tackle shop in antrim, it's so much cheaper than the packs. You have to buy it in grams, it felt like some drug deal was going down.

Beatnik, on those sizes one feather is more than adequate.

when i tie smaller flies i fold the cdc over twice then when i tie it in i fold it again and catch it in with a few turns this makes the flie look really small

A creche sounds like a great idea. We just had our first a month ago and i'm missing the fishing like crazy. We just bought a chest baby carrying thingy, i've been wondering if i could cast a fly wth it on.

Just a further note on the small stuff.
Had a fantastic nights fishing at wood ford last night with six fish two of which weighed six pounds apiece. Great fishing, but what is really of interest is the fact that I caught them all using the same fly. At no point did the hook mishape or straighten and at the end of the night the fly was still in perfect condition with the hook absolutely pristine. I have actually used the exact same fly before, so it has taken a few fish already. I passed it on to a young lad who was fishing there and I am sure it will catch a few more.
The hook was a size 20 Drennan Carbon Specimen. This is a short shanked silver coloured coarse fishing hook with a straight eye designed for heavy duty work particularly chub. The short shank and straight eye meant that the final dressing was more the size of a 22. As well as appearing to be virtually indestructable I also found it very easy to tie on.
They come in packs of 10 for about £1 and can be easily bought at most tackle shops. Due to the fiddliness of tying small hooks on and the tendancy for them to straighten so easily, I can see this pattern becoming my first choice for tying these tiny shuttlecock type flies. Highly recommended.

I must have missed you FF. I was on the far side by the island from about 20:15. George actually mentioned someone getting a couple of six pounders but I didn't know it was you. I managed to land one on a pheasant tail nymph and lost a brave few including getting broke twice. A good night's fun!

Beatnik,
Really sorry I didn't see you. I started off down at the bottom end fishing into the wind and missed a couple of fish. Walked up to the top later on when someone else mentioned the caenis. They said there was no point going up there as there was caenis everywhere. Spent the rest of the evening on the point. It was a great nights fishing.
