Enjoying the sunshine yesterday in my garden pond. At night there are actually twenty or more and they are in fine voice.

Brilliant FF great photo work there and its great to see them back as Watty says there are a load of these getting jiggy with it up in the canal behind us. I notice this year loads of spawn along the grass is this the birds pulling it out or are the frogs toads and newts just MAD

Probably frogs that have either not been able to reach the water, or they have spawned in flood water that has now gone. Sometimes the females will get mobbed on route to the water and be unable to go any further.( Bit like night clubs.) They usually choose very shallow water in weeds to protect the young from fish in open water. This leaves them vunerable to being left high and dry. See this a lot on the reservoirs when the water level starts to drop in the spring time leaving the spawn on dry grass.
Newts will lay eggs individually in water weed a little later on. Not the mass of jelly like spawn that frogs lay. Toads we don't have, there are I believe some natter-jack toads in the very south west of Ireland, but none this far north. Common toads are absent from Ireland.
