Starting to Tie FliesJust a bit of advice needed guys - if I was to start tying my own flies what sort of money would I need to spend on a vice etc.
Have looked at catalogues etc and they range from about £20.00 upwards.

Syd,
to start with there's no need to spend a fortune on a vice. £20 should get you a vice which will do the job for a while until you get more proficient and your needs change. I starterd tying again about 5 years ago and am still using a vice which cost about £26 (though I just noticed I could get it for about half that from the Glasgow Angling Centre). I'm only getting to the point now where I'm considering upgrading to something better.

I agree with BEATNIK69 One wee bit of advise go for one with a 360 degrees rotation. There handy if you need to do under body work to the fly your tying. Then like Beatnik69 says when get more experienced at tying flies you can go more up market.

That's the way I'll be going with my next vice. I was having a look on the Glasgow Angling Centre website earlier and saw rotating vices for under £20!

Sydb,
Agree with Apache and Beatnik, a cheap vice fulfills my needs perfectly, but next time I will buy one that I can rotate. Handy for tying beard hackles and cheeks on both sides of buzzers. My vice is a cheap one that works on a cam action, ie press a lever to open and allow it to close itself against a strong spring. No tension to adjust for different hook sizes so one less complication. Have had no problem so far with any hook size.
Spend money on good scissors, do not scrimp on these.

a good place to purchase fly tying gear SydB,, Darren has some great materials that not even the bigger shops have,,excellent range of hooks too in boxes of 100 so it works out much much cheaper than your standard packs of 25....
