Tips on Dry Fly Hackle

Hi All

tying in a hackle so that it can be wound on the the hook dry fly
style is not that difficult to do,,its a matter of making sure the dull
side of the feather is pointing towards the eye,so here are a few
Pic`s to explain how its done

firstly lets re cap on how we tie in a hackle in the usual
way demonstrated in the Photos below

Step 1
this is how the hackle is tied in for the normal procedure
notice the hackle has the concave facing BACK,, that is
to say the DULL SIDE is facing backwards

Step 2
we simply tie it down and wind FOWARD to achieve
this effect

Step 3
this time lets place the feather on top of the hook with
the DULL SIDE facing upwards like this

Step 4
now when we push the hackle upright the DULL SIDE
is facing the eye of the hook in this fashion

Step 5
again tie this down and wind forward to achieve
this effect,,thats how its tied for DRY FLIES

in the next few Photos im going to show you how to tie a quick
and easy dry fly using TWO materials,,a Hackle and some Dubbing
these can be tied in a matter of minutes in various colours with
different Hackles and Bodies

Step 1
tacke 4 turns of thread on the hook and tie in a hackle but
this time its tied in Rright at the EYE and notice the hackle is
facing FORWARD with the butt facing to the Bend of the hook
also notice the Hackle has the GOOD side facing UPWARDS

Step 2 here is the side on view,,simply wind on the thread
in touching turns working backwards to the bend of the
hook,,look how the Hackle is facing FORWARD out over
the eye still with the GOOD side facing UPWARDS

Step 3
trim the waste and take the thread to the bend of the hook
then push the hackle UPRIGHT like this, now we see how
the DULL side of the feather is still facing away from us

Step 4
simply Dubb on a body (any colour you like) and wind
on to form the body then stop ! around this position

Step 5
take a pair of hackle pliers, grip the hackle and begin
winding BACKWARDS towards the body like this, notice
how the hackle is facing forward DRY FLY STLYE,,a few
more turns and the fly is almost finished

Step 6
we have wound the hackle all the way BACK to just
were the body is then take the hackle slightly back still
being held with the hackle Pliers,,look were the thread is
just make a couple of turns of thread and trim the waste,
all i do now is wind the thread THROUGH the hackle
(which secures it even more) and stop right at the eye

Step 7
after winding THROUGH the hackle the thred should
be in this position,,right at the eye,, takle a couple of
turns of thread and whip finish

Step 8
the FINISHED FLY
nice and neat,,no bulky head and quick and simple to tie
you could easily knock up quite a few of these in no time
