Tips on Tying (Part 2)

Tips on Tying Hackles

here i am going to show a couple of methods to tie in a hackle
again im using UNI 8.0 thread and the materials are tied on a
larger hook to try and give the best possible view

Step 1
place the hook in the vice and make EIGHT turns
of thread

Step 2
you can tie in the hackle on the side of the hook
like this which is quite common

Step 3
for this fly i tie it in on the TOP of the hook like
this and trim the waste

Step 4
simply push the hackle up with your thumb and
you can see that we have left plenty of space to
wind the hackle forward also leaving lots of room
behind the hackle to dub on a body

step 5
lets assume you have a piece of dubbing already on
the thread and you want to wind forward,, by tying
in the hackle at the start this has now allowed us to
wind forward and be very accurate as to where we
stop the body,,look how close against the hackle stem
we were able to go with the body of dubbing..

Step 6
simply wind in front of the hackle which also secures
it even more and allows you to stop very close at the
eye without going to far,,you are now ready to wind
the hackle forward

Step 7
i was able to make 6 turns of the hackle quite comfortably
and leave plenty of room to tie it in

Step 8
i have pulled the hackle forward slightly here to give
a better view and to show where i had tied in the hackle
i used 3 turns of thred to secure it then trimmed the waste

Step 9
pull the hackle back with your index finger and thumb
then make a couple of turns of thread and whip finish
job done,,notice the nice neat small head and no where
near the eye of the hook, it may look a bit big but i assure
you its quite small as i have zoomed up pretty close to
show how the method of tying in the hackle FIRST allows
me to be quite accurate when finishing a fly and keeping
well away from the eye which is a common mistake we
all make

Step 10
here is a slightly over head shot (a bit blurred) but it
also shows how far back from the eye i was able to get

i hope this was helpful to everyone

All comments/questions welcome

Brilliant Very Happy

I have always done it the other way round. Always end up fighting for space with hackle and head. End up with thread half way down hook eye.

Will most definitly give this a go. Good tip, thanks FB>
