Woodford. - Idiot Proof FishingWent to Woodford today and fished like a complete idiot. After fishing an intermediate line all winter I just could not seem to cast a floater. Continually caught the fly on the line and hit the rod. Tangle after tangle, went through about six leaders and continually caught the grass behind me. Put the intermediate back on and things were OK, floater on again, fishing like a muppet.
Wind was blowing an absolute gale from the north west which really does not help my feeble casting efforts at all. But, in spite of my incompetence I still managed to catch 10 fish. 10 fish, at least I was a happy muppet. The best was a perfectly proportioned rainbow with really large dark spots that would have weighed the best part of 4lb. A really beautiful fish. Just about everyone else on the lake was also catching well.
Seven out of the ten came to a little gold head fritz tied in sunburst yellow on a size 12. The others came to a size 12 black doritos buzzer. Swopped between lines all day and caught on both floater and clear intermediate. After lunch there was a hatch of very small dark buzzers. Fish were rising to them, but I think the best of the buzzer fishing is ahead of us.
Love to catch fish on floating line and buzzers, so will have to really knuckle down and beat this casting thing. More practice required and probably the services of our very own Hardy Caster at some stage.

nice report fossil
when i first cast an intermediate near broke my wrist let alone my rod as wasnt aware of how much line was still in water for back cast.
certainly interfered with my ability to fish a floating line for a while too
must be a timing thing
hardy will sort you out n worth his weight in fish (gold being too expensive now)

I've been having the same trouble FF. I think it's in the timing. I don't think I was allowing the line enough time to unfurl on the backcast.

woodfordCouple of lessons with Stevie is definitely the answer, even though he said I was casting like larry Grayson I would still recommend it.
Im still practising what he told me but he changed the way I was casting completely and I have improved 100%.
