Words of Wisdom at WoodfordOthers were catching quite well today, and the fishery has been producing some very big fish of late, but I had a fairly difficult day. A combination of the easterly winds and the 'should have been here yesterday' factor. There was some compensation in being able to sit on the grass and watch an absolutely huge buzzard soaring over the fields to the north of the fishery. It kept all the other wildlife out of sight including the usual kestrels. I think some of the cows even looked worried. I assume it is the female of the pair that we all watched on St Patrick's day.
I ended the day with 2 fish about the 2lb mark. The quality of the rainbows from Woodford at the minute is stunning. They were fin perfect, with the most beautiful markings and proportions. Both fish came to black buzzers under an indicator. I lost another fish whilst fishing my buzzer in conjunction with a suspender pattern. Different methods were taking fish for other anglers, but I heard black buzzers mentioned more than once.
On two occasions I lost my complete leader to the trees at the island end of the lake. Among the flies left in the branches was one of my doritos buzzers. I was very pleased with this little pattern as it took a lot of effort from me to tie, and has accounted for several fish, including one today. The other fish came to a red cheeked pattern. When you have a good look round Woodford and see the number of trees by the lake you will realise what an achievement it is to keep doing this.
Jimmy, a very wise man who works at Woodford, imparted two very profound and helpful pieces of wisdom as I was leaving, ..........
Number One - A bad day at Woodford is much better than even the very best of all the beds in The Royal.
Number Two - Darren never stocks the trees.

If they had of been reachable at all I would have had them back. They were quite difficult to tie, slicing up the packets thin enough to get cheek pieces, added to the fact I hate Doritos.
As for the fight, quite one sided on 6lb leader.

Back again today for a few hours including my fry.
East wind was still blowing, stronger than yesterday and fishing was still difficult. Started with my slime line and had one fish about 2 1/2lbs on a sunburst fritz damsel.
After lunch I found a few fish rising close to the bank at the top corner. I sat down on the adjacent bank and watched them as I set up my floating line. Put on a little black emerger that I had tied myself and ginked it up. I still have a lot to learn about tying dry flies as it simply refused to float. Tried a similar pattern tied with hare's ear and it worked fine. Had to cast back along the bank right into the corner inches from the bank. Couple of fish rose near it and then fish about 2lb took it with confidence. It fought like an absolute demon and gave me great satisfaction to catch.

Adrian,
Yes, I am always on a tree fish ticket, although I can manage a variety of vegatation.
Glad to know it happens to other people too.
Chris,
Yes, the cheesy doritos. I don't even like them and have to steal the empty packets from the grandchildren. There is a sort of faded effect as the colour changes from dark to light on very small portions of the packet. The fact they are made of a type of plastic foil and have this strange air brush type colour change makes for a great effect on the finished buzzer. Akward and fiddly, but they look so good when they are varnished up it's almost a shame to fish with them. But they do catch fish.

yea my dad used the older packets that were a bright orange all over, but you cant seem to get them anymore. he always had good success on them, havnt tied them myself but watched him cutting packets up wit stanley blade, but as you say it is worth it.
Get a wee step-by-step up fossil, so i can see how u tie them

Chris,
neither my tying or my photography would be up to a step by step.
Firey Brown might be willing to take on the challenge.
Here is how one of my efforts turned out.

No way, the maggots keep sliding off when I crush the barbs down.
