If you want protected waters you have to be thinking private nowadays. Baronscourt, Blessingbourne and the like although I have also heard good reports of Loughall Lake.

I know from my serious pike fishing days that guys who had found such waters tended to be very secretive, I know I was. Starting point was always an ordinance survey map and a free day to drive round just looking and calling at farm doors. Places that can't be seen from the road, can't be reached by vehicles or can not have boats launched on them are always a good starting point. Having said all that I was having some very good results from some popular well fished venues, but you are sure that this is only a temporary state of affairs and will not last. Time and lots of effort and good luck are what are required.

I think it also depends on what you expect from your piking. For specimen sized fish you really do have to travel or just get very lucky. In recent years I have been quite happy to fish waters that may throw up the odd double but will provide a few runs and action from much smaller fish. This type of fishing pleases me now that I do not have the time or inclination to dedicate my life to a fish. Priorties change. If you are happy with these sort of results you could do worse than start by having a look at some of our river venues, perhaps as a starting point the Lower Bann.
